Cough medicine ingredients and what to look for

Use this handy dictionary guide to understand cough medicine ingredients and the symptom checklist to know what you should be looking for.

Dextromethorphan. A cough suppressant.


Guaifenesin. An expectorant — loosens phlegm.


Codeine. A cough suppressant and pain reliever. Also, a habit-forming narcotic. Never give to children under six without a doctor's approval.


Pseudoephedrine and Phenylephrine. Both decongestants. They make breathing easier.


Acetaminophen. A pain reliever and fever reducer — as found in the TYLENOL® brand. Very useful when either pain or fever is present.


Antihistamines. There are too many to list by name; a few examples would include chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine. In general, they block or slow down the production and flow of mucus, whether due to colds or allergies. Drowsiness is an occasional side-effect.
