Cold and flu season is on the way again. As we spend more time indoors, we become more susceptible to those nasty little rhinoviruses that cause the respiratory infections we know as colds and flu. Adults can expect two to four colds a year. Kids (and their parents) average six to eight.

 

Sometimes, especially with children, it’s tricky knowing when it’s safe to treat the symptoms yourself and when you should call your doctor. That’s why you need to figure out first whether you’re dealing with a cold or flu.

 

Colds start slowly - flu comes on fast
The first thing to watch for is how fast the symptoms come on. Colds take 2 or 3 days to develop. The first symptoms to watch for are a scratchy, sore throat followed by sneezing and runny nose. Temperature is usually normal or only slightly higher. A mild cough often develops a few days later.
