How a stress test detects problems


A stress test can detect abnormalities in the way your heart functions under exertion. This helps diagnose heart problems.


A stress test (or exercise test) is used to check how well the heart performs while under the physical stress of doing exercise, such as walking or running on a treadmill.

 

Because the heart has to work harder and requires more oxygen during exercise, this test can frequently detect problems, such as heart disease, that might not show up when a person is resting.

 

In a stress test, a machine called an electrocardiogram (also called an ECG) is used to measure the way the heart beats. To do this, several electrodes are attached to the skin, which detect the electrical signals emitted by the heart as the person exercises...
